Maverick Entertainment is one of the leading distributors of Black cinema, with more than 1,500 films released over 25 years. I supported the brand during a sensitive PR moment by helping shift the public conversation from crisis response to mission-driven action.
Through a partnership with Black Girl Film School, Maverick was able to invest directly in the next generation of Black filmmakers while reinforcing its commitment to representation, access, and storytelling. The campaign earned 339 media placements within the first day and helped build momentum for continued publicity work across several Maverick film releases.
Project Snapshot
Helping an independent Black cinema distributor move from crisis response into trust-building action through partnership strategy, mission-driven PR, and entertainment publicity.
the approach
I worked with Maverick Entertainment to support brand trust, partnership strategy, PR, and film publicity by:
Helping secure a partnership with Black Girl Film School focused on creating more access for young Black girls interested in filmmaking.
Supporting a public-facing campaign that connected Maverick’s mission to a real investment in future storytellers.
Developing messaging around the partnership, including scholarships, an “Ask the Expert” series, a short film contest, and a pitch opportunity with Maverick’s Executive Team.
Helping shift the public narrative from crisis response to community investment and industry access.
Supporting press release development and media outreach for Maverick projects.
Creating social media and promotional copy for film campaigns, including The Comeback, Women of the Jury, and Boxed In 2.
Helping promote Maverick’s original films and talent through earned media and digital publicity.

the challenge
Maverick Entertainment was facing an online public relations crisis that threatened to damage trust in the brand and its mission.
The crisis response was led by PR crisis manager Molly McPherson. I was brought in during the next phase of the work to help Maverick rebuild trust, reinforce its values, and show audiences that the company was taking meaningful action beyond public statements.
At the same time, Maverick needed continued support promoting its original films, talent, and larger role in Black entertainment.
the results
Helped Maverick move through a sensitive PR moment with a values-aligned partnership that supported its larger mission.
Secured a partnership with Black Girl Film School to provide students with filmmaking resources, scholarship opportunities, expert access, and a direct pitch opportunity with Maverick’s Executive Team.
Helped generate 339 total media placements for the partnership announcement as of March 7, 2023.
Earned coverage for the partnership in outlets including Essence, Black Enterprise, KTLA, Benzinga, and WFMZ.
Continued supporting Maverick after the partnership campaign through social media, PR, and publicity support for multiple film releases.
Helped position Maverick as a company investing in the next generation of Black filmmakers, not just promoting Black cinema.
